Paul Wurth

1870

Eugène Muller builds a boilermaking facility in Luxembourg Hollerich, known to the townsfolk by the name “Kesselfabrek”. This is the birth of the Paul Wurth Company.
1890

The business is taken over by Paul Wurth, a young engineer, whose pioneering spirit deeply marks the company’s history. The firm specialises in the erection of metal structures, especially the construction of metal bridges and blast furnace shells.
1907

The first 1-meter Grey-beam is manufactured by Paul Wurth.

1920

The company is incorporated under the name Société Anonyme des Anciens Etablissements Paul Wurth.
1926

Paul Wurth sells his shares to ARBED.
1951

Paul Wurth acquires the licenses needed to supply complete blast furnaces and ancillary components from British firm Ashmore, Benson, Pease & Co.
1954

Construction of a first blast furnace at S.A. Métallurgique d‘Espérance-Longdoz in Seraing, Belgium.
1969

Paul Wurth engineers invent the Bell Less Top® charging system, a revolutionary, innovative system for blast furnace charging.

1977

Société Anonyme des Anciens Etablissements Paul Wurth becomes Paul Wurth S.A.

By now, Paul Wurth has become an international market leader to the ironmaking industry. A first subsidiary is incorporated in Brazil. In the following years, a worldwide network of entities is set up.
2003

Together with Dango & Dienenthal Maschinenbau, the TMT Tapping Measuring Technology joint venture is created.
2004

Paul Wurth transfers its fabrication activities to Arcelor Dommeldange and becomes a pure engineering company.

Integration of Didier – M&P Energietechnik as Paul Wurth Refractory & Engineering GmbH, specialised in hot blast stove technology and refractory & lining concepts.
2005

Take-over of the blast furnace, coke making and direct reduction activities from SMS Demag S.p.A. and integration of the staff into the newly created Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A.
2009

Paul Wurth S.A. takes a stake in CTI Systems, a leading provider of intralogistics solutions for heavy loads. In 2013, the company becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Paul Wurth group.
2012

Creation of Paul Wurth IHI Co., Ltd. in Japan, a joint venture with IHI Corporation.
2012

SMS group acquires a majority stake in Paul Wurth, taking over the shares previously owned by ArcelorMittal and Luxempart. Paul Wurth becomes part of the SMS group.

2014

Paul Wurth takes over the cokemaking segment of the German company Schalker Eisenhütte Maschinenfabrik and reinforces its coke oven technology portfolio by adding coke oven machinery. In 2018, Paul Wurth completes its offer by acquiring the machine segment of KOCH Industrieanlagen’s stamp charged batteries .
2014

Paul Wurth signs a construction license agreement with Kobe Steel to build MIDREX® gas-based direct reduction plants.
2017

Merger of the German subsidiaries Paul Wurth Umwelttechnik GmbH and Paul Wurth Refractory & Engineering GmbH into the newly incorporated Paul Wurth Deutschland GmbH, with offices in Wiesbaden and Essen.
2018

Paul Wurth becomes lead investor in, and technology partner of, Sunfire GmbH – and gains access to a specialist team as well as to a promising technology in the field of hydrogen production.
2021

SMS becomes the sole owner of Paul Wurth’s plant engineering business, making Luxembourg a global innovation center for metallurgy and hydrogen technology within SMS group
