PAUL WURTH CONTRIBUTING TO SAIL’S BHILAI STEEL PLANT CAPACITY EXPANSION

Paul Wurth contributing to SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant capacity expansion

Luxembourg, Genoa & New Delhi, 20 September 2010. Paul Wurth Italia S.p.A. along with Paul Wurth India Pvt. Ltd. and the local partner Larsen & Toubro Limited entered into contract agreement with the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) for the design, construction, supply and commissioning of a new blast furnace to be erected at Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP).

The blast furnace No. 8 will have an inner volume of 4,060 m3. It is the largest blast furnace ever awarded to Paul Wurth in India, and it will feature proven solutions as well as state-of-the-art technology. The order includes:

  • The blast furnace itself with closed-loop cooling circuits, equipped with copper and cast iron stave coolers;
  • A GEN2 two-hopper Bell Less Top® charging system;
  • Two flat castfloors and four tapholes, fitted with TMT* full-hydraulic casthouse machines;
  • High-performance hot blast stoves with internal combustion chamber including a recently developed heat recovery system which makes use of the heat from the stoves’ waste gases for savings in fuel consumption;
  • A energy recovery turbine for generating electric power from the kinetic energy of the BF top gas stream;
  • The pulverized coal injection system and two INBA® slag granulation plants.

SAIL BSP intends to produce more than 3 million tons of hot metal per year by means of the new No. 8 BF. Start-up of the plant is planned for January 2013, after an only 28-month period from the signature of the contract.

After the recently completed modernization of blast furnace 2 in Bokaro, the order represents another prove of SAIL’s confidence in Paul Wurth’s ironmaking technology and plant building competence.

*TMT is a joint company of Dango & Dienenthal and Paul Wurth S.A.
